Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Day: December 12, 2018

Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Day: December 12, 2018

Priests and seminarians, as is their annual custom, celebrated their patroness’s feast day with great ceremony.  Our Lady of Guadalupe’s altar was decorated with hundreds of flowers acquired through the generous donations of benefactors.  Seminarians finished decorating the altar before 1st Vespers of the feast day after which the priests and seminarians held a procession to the altar and finished by reconsecrating themselves to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Later that evening, the seminarians continued an old Mexican tradition of singing to Our Lady’s image through the open chapel side loft.  Different groups of seminarians took turns singing various pieces dedicated to our Lady.  The next day, the seminary was happy to welcome His Excellency, Robert Finn, Bishop Emeritus of the diocese of St. Joseph-Kansas City, to offer a Pontifical Mass.  That evening after 2nd Vespers, the priests and seminarians held a wonderful dinner to celebrate the day, which began with a display of fireworks.  We thank the benefactors whose contributions made this feast’s festivities possible.

Immaculate Conception: December 8, 2018

For the Feast of Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary was happy to welcome His Excellency, James Conley, Bishop of the Diocese of Lincoln, together with diocesan seminarians from their nearby seminary, St. Gregory the Great Seminary.

The evening started off in the chapel with Solemn Pontifical Vespers at the Throne.  Afterwards, all were able to go to OLGS refectory to enjoy a splendid meal prepared by the chefs to celebrate the patronal Feast Day not only of the diocese of Lincoln but also of the United States.

Thanksgiving and Buckley Bowl: November 22, 2018

Thanksgiving and Buckley Bowl: November 22, 2018

As is the annual custom on Thanksgiving at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary, the seminarians started off the day by playing a football game called the Buckley Bowl in honor of Fr. James Buckley, FSSP, who started the seminarian tradition.  The game remained close almost to the end, with the half time scores coming to 9-7.  However, a key interception and two second half touchdowns from first year seminarian Brandon Rice were able to seal victory for his team at 9-21.

After the game, the seminarians gathered up in the Refectory to have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner.  We wish to thank the benefactors that made such a meal possible.

We pray that you had a blessed Thanksgiving.

Minor Ordinations: November 17, 2018

Minor Ordinations: November 17, 2018

We give thanks to God for the men who received minor orders on Saturday, November 17, 2018.  His Excellency, Robert Finn, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph, came to the Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary to confer the ordinations during a Solemn Pontifical Mass.

Eleven men in their third year of studies received the first two orders of Porter and Lector, and ten men in their fourth year received the next two orders of Exorcist and Acolyte.  Please continue to pray for these men as they continue in their discernment and formation for the holy Priesthood.

All Souls’ Day: November 2, 2018

All Souls’ Day: November 2, 2018

After celebrating the Feast of All Saints the day before, priests and seminarians observed the Commemoration of All Souls the next day.  The seminarians started the day with one of the seminary priests offering three Masses in the morning for the souls of the faithful departed.  As is the custom at OLGS, the seminarians and priests met in the seminary graveyard for the Office midday prayer.

From November 1-8, the Church has granted to the faithful the privilege of gaining one plenary indulgence for the Holy Souls in Purgatory each day simply by going to a graveyard and praying, even if only mentally, for the Holy Souls.  If it is at all possible during this week, let us try to take advantage of this privilege so as to release as many souls as possible from Purgatory into Heaven.

Please continue to pray for these men as they continue in their discernment and formation for the holy priesthood.
